A No-till/Cover Crop Field Day is planned for Wednesday August 27th at the Tom Howe farm west of Highway 75 in Richardson County. Tom has been continuous no-tilling for around 20 years and has been incorporating cover crops into his cropping system, usually following wheat and then grazing them.

The field day will start at 9:30 a.m. with registration and the program begins at 10:00 a.m. We have planted different cover crop combinations for the field day for evaluation following wheat harvest. Lance Gunderson, from Ward Laboratories will discuss the “Haney Test” a new Soil Health Test that is used to evaluate soil health and other tests and issues relating to soil health. UNL Extension Specialist Paul Jasa will discuss Cover Crops in No-Till Systems. Neil Dominy, State Soil Scientist with NRCS and other NRCS staff will conduct demonstrations on soil runoff, water infiltration and discuss other soil properties. Keith Berns from Green Cover Seed will discuss different cover crops and their uses in cropping systems.
